The next morning, Kimi woke up groggy. She looked over to see Maria’s bed empty. From downstairs, the sounds of laughter, forks scraping on plates, and clinking glasses filled the air.

She padded down the steps to find the other girls in the kitchen. As she entered, silence filled the room, and she suddenly had the distinct impression that the girls had been talking about her before she walked in.

Maria turned and smiled when she saw Kimi, and so did Amanda, but the rest of the girls stared coldly. Lindsay wore an expression of pure envy, and Shannon, always in agreement, looked exactly the same. Nicole, for her part, looked equal parts jealous and sad.

“Waffle?” asked Maria as she pulled a perfect golden Eggo from the toaster.

Kimi’s stomach grumbled. “Sounds great,” she said. The waffle smelled like pure bliss. Kimi took an empty plate from a stack and set it down in front of her place at the counter, next to Amanda.

Lindsay snickered.

“A whole waffle?” Lindsay whispered to Shannon. “Why am I not surprised?”

Kimi looked down at herself, shame flooding through her.

“So… how’d everyone sleep?” she asked, hoping to dull the awkwardness.

“Great,” said Nicole, eating a big bite of waffle. “The couch downstairs was actually way more comfortable than the one in Maria’s room.”

She smiled at Kimi and took another bite of waffle.

For months, Kimi had fantasized about a sleepover like this—all the most popular girls at school getting together for late-night talks and gossip and food. But this morning she didn’t feel happy, and looking around the room, she didn’t think the rest of the girls did, either.

Nicole, Shannon, and Lindsay clearly didn’t take kindly to being on the outside looking in. To an outsider, they might have seemed to be on top of the social ladder, but the truth was that Maria was one rung higher, stepping on all of them.
